I think the only thing that's too ambiguous are the eyes. I get that they have white eyes/black lids but it's kind of hard to unsee the black bits as pupils sometimes. like the bottom girl 2nd from the left looks like she's looking down. they're really sweet, though. like the little girl in the top row 2nd from left kind of looks cute in a derpy way if you read those as her pupils.

I've tried adding pupils a few times, sometimes black, sometimes outlines...they always make the character look a. more generic and "cartoony" and b. too detailed.

Still might to find a solution though, I see what you mean about the ambiguous eyelids

yeah eyes are the hardest thing for me to figure out how to do in final artwork. you can sketch or doodle them easily but when you have to make a firm decision about a line it loses some of the magic. I do like the ambiguousness of the lids, though, I think it sort of gets across what you were talking about with a feature that could only be done in a drawing.
